| Meaningful, new use for the Showroom UO has been acquiring property along Franklin Boulevard to allow for future expansion. The University of Oregon Campus Plan (2005) explains that "University ownership on both sides of the boulevard gives an opportunity to convey the image of driving "through" rather than "by" the campus." In 2005 this iconic, local structure and the former dealership properties were purchased by the UO Foundation. In September of 2007, I wrote to University of Oregon President Frohnmayer to share my appreciation for the Showroom and to learn more about how the University regards the structure and it's future within the University's development plans. President Frohnmayer responded to my inquiry, in part, by stating: "If the showroom is to remain a viable part of the University's holdings, an appropriate use for it will need to be identified." What do you think would be the best reuse of the Showroom? Please send your suggestions or feedback> to: info@eugenemodern.org. |

Clean lines and the use of minimally-worked materials impart simplicity and contribute to a calm environment conducive to studying. Punches of color in the interior design create impact of message. A highly-technical synthesis of performance; academic, athletic, & architectural. |

Erb Memorial Union FishbowlCompleted: 1950Lawrence & LawrenceSheltered, yet open environment provides for eating, socializing and studying. The thoughtful use of curve in a series of near-floor to ceiling glass windows provide a "panoramic" view of the park-like campus surrounding. The Fishbowl necessarily contrasts in form (yet is complimentary in function) to the adjacent, utilitarian and rectilinear student service-oriented spaces. |
| The Campus Plan 2005 Development of University-owned properties is primarily effected according to the policies of the UO Campus Plan (2005). Policy 7 of the Campus Plan is titled Architectural Style & Historic Preservation. It describes the University's historic buildings and landscapes as "...artifacts of the cultural heritage of the community, the state, and the nation." The historic preservation policy refinement paragraph (b) states: "When altering interior or exterior resources that are listed or eligible to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the university, through the University Planning Office, will consult with the State Historic Preservation Office as appropriate." It is unclear how the Plan may or may not affect future development of the Romania property. According to the Plan, recommendations from the Campus Planning Committee (CPC) are sought for UO-owned, off campus, privately controlled projects in order to "identify Plan policies and patterns to be considered during design." Later, the UO President can either "accept or modify the CPC's recommendations and list of policies and patterns." |
